Ice Cream, Morphine and Television

Every once in a while, Y-Rock has an all-staff meeting...usually, almost all of the DJs and volunteers are there, which makes for an interesting atmosphere due to the abundance of characters that Y-Rock calls its staff...this Monday, however, there were only about 10 people at the staff meeting, making it one of the quickest and most painless meetings in recent memory...then again, the benignity of the night and everyone involved doesn't make for particularly interesting story fodder, as there weren't the usual, er, "voicing of opinions" that spice up the average meeting...at any rate, it's neat to have a gathering like that since there are very few times when so many of the DJs get to see one another...

Unfortunately, Monday had a bit of a somber overtone due to the news that one of my favorite comedians, George Carlin, had passed away...I saw George in Las Vegas (incidentally at the Stardust, which isn't there anymore) back in 2005, and he was as funny and lively as he had been throughout his entire career...while I'm not sure how long I've had two of his books, Brain Droppings and Napalm And Silly Putty, my copy of Brain Droppings has my initials along the bottom, a tell-tale sign that it went with me to camp at least one summer...his comedy was such a riot, and he was always terrific in every TV and movie appearance (even if the programs themselves were less than enjoyable)...

Day 314 - June 23rd, 2008

'One thing leads to another'? Not always. Sometimes one thing leads to the same thing. Ask an addict.

At least we'll always have his stuff, as long as we can find a place for it...

On another note, Dad and I continued keeping the house together as Mom was on her way back from Florida...we've been doing a pretty good job since I know how to use the washer and dryer (as we've seen my impressive "old glasses and long hair Viking Laundry Skills")...however, I'll be damned if I can figure out how to use the dish washer...to get around having to dish-wash anything, Dad and I used mostly paper goods (as we usually do), and just used the same mugs and glasses everyday and washed them as soon as we were done...if you were try to do that with your laundry, it would be very impractical, but it somehow works with the dishes and such...this was my glass of choice for the week:

Day 315 - June 24th, 2008

Itchycoo Park, that's where I've been

Oi!

Wednesday I was asked to board-op Y-Rock's broadcast of Rob Dickinson's show from World Cafe Live...if the name sorta rings a bell, Rob was the frontman of The Catherine Wheel, who did a few songs you might have heard of...nomt surprisingly, there were a few odd things that went on before and during the broadcast...World Cafe Live's Downstairs venue was rented out to a local rhumba radio station, and evidently had booked a very popular performer from the rhumba scene...the whole building was packed (with most of the people going to the downstairs event), and the rhumba station's van was parked right out front in the loading zone like a billboard on wheels...in fact, it was out there for so long that it got a parking ticket (presumably a small price to pay to advertise your station right out on the Walnut Street bridge)...

When we broadcast things from World Cafe Live (Upstairs or Downstairs), there is a certain fader on the XPN control board that can bring up audio being fed from the venue's mixing board...last night, for some reason, the "WCL UP" fader was picking up audio from both Upstairs and Downstairs...so instead of hearing Rob Dickinson, I heard Rob Dickinson mixed in with rhumba music that was coming from Downstairs...a few emergency CDs (thanks, [info]glitterglamgirl ) and a late intro later, and we had Rob and his band on the air having only missed one song (of course, it was one of the few Catherine Wheel songs I know, "Crank")...he also let out a few curse words while talking between songs, but I'm pretty sure I had the delay working right and dropped the words before they went out over the air (it's funny that, for all the times I've been at the board while there's a live concert and they delay is on, I've never had to use the "Delay Dump" until last night)...after the show, there was a signing with Rob, but you could have won a signed copy of his CD if you visited the Y-Rock table...

Day 316 - June 25th, 2008

It's the colour of your skin/Your skin is black metallic

So today, Mom came home from her long, strange trip to Florida...she told Dad and me a bunch of goofy stories about Disney and family and family in Disney, and showed us pictures of Pudge Guy in various places in Disney World...she also showed us a bunch of pins that she got through trading and purchasing (and even some that were given to her by some friendly Cast Members!)...my favorite was the set of Cast-lanyard pins featuring characters from the Haunted Mansion...it's the sort of thing that strengthens my hope for Disney in general (since Kevin Yee's findings can sometimes get me down), because it's clearly made for the people who know Disney (and the Haunted Mansion) inside out...

Day 317 - June 26th, 2008

We find it delightfully unlivable here in this ghostly retreat

Yeah, you'd almost have to be a Disney person to appreciate those pins...

Tomorrow is more Y-Rock, and then Mission Of Burma at night (with the almost ironically-chosen opener, Versus)...

Just remember me when
We used to be friends
