[Nov. 10th, 2008|10:17 pm] |
It's funny how, within the alternative/indie music world, there are some bands that are wildly popular when compared to other bands in the very same scene...you would think that, as a band became more and more popular, they would stop being 'alternative' and cross over into more mainstream territory...some might tell you that this is exactly what happened to The Decemberists, and I'm not sure I'd be quick to argue...however, there have been more than just a few cases in history of a band hitting it big and still remaining true to their own creative direction...
The Decemberists released their first album, Castaways And Cutouts, in 2002...in my opinion, this is their best album, as the next two would mostly retread the literate, waltz-time path that their debut blazed...their fourth album, 2006's The Crane Wife, though, was their first for Capitol Records, and it shows...along with a few nautical-folk moments, there are some completely uncharacteristic turns and explorations into genres like funk, big guitar rock, and (gulp) prog...in concert on Friday night, the band played a good amount of material from each of their albums, and focused rather heavily on their new singles series, Always The Bridesmaid...according to leader Colin Meloy, their upcoming album, Hazards Of Love, lacks many of the more jaunty numbers that drove their previous albums; however those missing songs are being released one at a time over a few months (the last of the three singles comes out the first week of December)...Still, the band puts on a really good show, and brings great life and energy into some of the more questionable songs in their catalogue...the show is interactive as well, with Meloy getting everyone in the Electric Factory to sit down during "The Perfect Crime #2", or rousing an Obama-inspired call-and-response during the not-so-subtle "16 Military Wives"...naturally, their devoted (and ever-growing) audience ate it all up...
From where I was standing, I had a tough time getting good pictures, but a few that I did catch were pretty good...
As always, there are a few more pictures from this show (and lots more from other shows) here...
Additionally, Y-Rock, XPN and NPR Music were broadcasting the show live that night, and now have it archived for your streaming pleasure...

[Sep. 23rd, 2008|01:39 pm] |
As you probably know, I've been the engineer for the live studio sessions on The Folk Show for quite some time now...it's a funny story of how I came about this position and how it has affected my work at XPN...
Initially, I had no interest in learning how to use the mixing console...I didn't want to go into audio production, so I didn't want to concern myself with something that I wouldn't be using in an on-air position...as it turns out, I had to learn how to use the board because the fella who was the engineer at the time was going to be leaving...I was chosen as his successor because I had be there the longest of the other production guys and it seemed like I was going to be around the longest...as it turns out, learning how to work with the board wasn't that difficult (it's the musicians that are difficult to work with!)...before long, I was mixing sessions by myself, and I'm even showing a new production assistant how to mix sessions (don't worry, I'm not leaving any time soon, but it's good to have more than one person around who can mix a session)...
As it turns out, learning how to use the mixing board was one of the most beneficial things I've done for my radio career (and not just for The Folk Show)...somehow, word got around to the XPN people (the Folk Show team is only at the station on Sunday nights) that I was mixing sessions...from there, I was offered the chance to do the live mix for the Kids Corner stage at this past summer's festival, and mix sessions for shows other than the Folk Show...a few weeks ago, I mixed the band [ism] for a Y-Rock session...the set-up was rather similar to the ones I'm used to on the Folk Show...that is, all acoustic guitars and a small drum kit...it wasn't that demanding of a session, so it wasn't that hard to mix...
This past Friday, [XPN afternoon host/Y-Rock program director] Jim McGuinn comes into the Y-Rock studio during my shift and asks if I would be available to mix a session with the band Darker My Love (they opened for The Dandy Warhols at the TLA this weekend)...of course I was willing to do so, not realizing how immensely different this session would be in comparison to all the other ones I've done...Darker My Love are a psychedelic/shoegaze type of band, but are also quite poppy...because their records are very heavy with reverb, they wanted a similar effect in this session...they also had a few requests on how to 'pan' the instruments (that means how heavily skewed to the right or left channels in stereo)...in the end, I think I learned a lot about how I can experiment a bit more with what I already know, benefiting both the Y-Rock sessions that I mix as well as the Folk Show sessions...
This Thursday, I'll be mixing Philadephia blues/rock duo Victor Victor Band...it's kind of funny because the band and I share a friend in Steve D, and guitarist Jamie Victor has e-mailed me before thanking me for playing them on my show...
I guess the moral of the story is that you should take every opportunity to learn something new, because it just might be the thing that gets you the furthest and you'll always........
...holy crap, All Tomorrow's Parties was at Kutscher's...

The Dandy Warhols - ...Earth To The Dandy Warhols... (Beat The World Records)
Okay, I get it; the CD is dead, long live the digital download. It seems that there's a new variation on the theme with each band that joins the 'give it away' club. In the case of The Dandy Warhols, they didn't give it away to just anyone. Sharing its name with a song from an earlier self-released album, ...Earth To The Dandy Warhols... was offered to members of the band's online fan club just over three months before its physical release date. The unorthodox release isn't the only thing that makes this album different from the Dandys' past efforts. Earth provides a look into the eclectic mind of leader Courtney Taylor-Taylor, with noisy disco ("Welcome To The Third World"), bubblegum pop ("Valerie Yum") and classic Dandys psychedelia ("Mission Control," "Wasp In The Lotus") being some of the album's more accessible turns. The real oddities are songs like "Mis Amigos," a Spanish-inflected ode to the band's favorite vices, and the head-scratchingly fun "The Legend Of The Last Of The Outlaw Truckers AKA The Ballad Of Sheriff Shorty," which is over the top, even for the Dandys. All is not so baffling on Earth, with lead track "The World The People Together (Come On)" bringing in some Go! Team-style chants and the very lovely "Love Song" bringing some highbrow guitarists (namely Mark Knopfler and Mike Campbell) into the dense mix. Though I'm not sure anyone (fan club member or otherwise) is ready for the 14-minute closer "Musee D'Nougat," it does offer some delectable background on the fluffy confection. ...Earth To The Dandy Warhols... won't be bringing in the scores of new fans like Thirteen Tales Of Urban Bohemia did, but it is a treat for the band's established (and very patient) fanbase.
